This picture is really cool. It i the "beach front" (made up of pulverized bones from millions of dead fish and barnacles) of the Sultan Sea. A really fascinating place on the San Andreas Fault, in Riverside County, California (about 30 miles from Coachella). It has an amazing history and poses very unique environmental conservation challenges. Bri Occhino [CSUCI]

I’m Nick Whicker and I would call Southeast Alaska my home. Living near the ocean my entire life, as well as living from it, has inspired my interest in the natural sciences. I’m about to graduate this December with a Bachelor’s of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Alaska Southeast Juneau campus. My academic interests are primarily in (marine)biology and evolution, though I’m also quite interested in the physical sciences such as chemistry, physics, and oceanography and geography. I look forward to having discussions and interdisciplinary discourse with both my peers in Alaska and the students in California. The coldest temperature I’ve experienced was in Soldotna, Alaska at -14 or -15 degrees F; and in Southeast Alaska around -5 degrees F in Ketchikan.

Hi, my name is Jen and I am an Environmental Science major. I was born in Oxnard, California and when I was 7 years old the temperature was recorded at ~27°F. Even though it was 29 years ago, I remember the kids in my class not wanting to go outside to play because it was too cold.
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Ashlee Coronado and I’m an Environmental Science major. I live in Oxnard and I believe the coldest temperature I’ve encountered in Oxnard is 39° F.
Hi Ashlee, Please send me beach pics!
DeleteHi my name is Bri and I am an ESRM major at CSUCI. I was born in Wisconsin and the coldest temperatures I have ever experienced there was about negative 27°F in the middle of the day (not including wind chill). After my deployment to Afghanistan I moved to Southern California in the fall of 2013. I live in Newbury Park, California with the coldest temperature I have experienced here being about 34°F at about 4am.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Aaron Tello and I am a Communications major. I am definitely out of my element in this subject but I am looking forward to this class. the coldest weather I have experienced is 17°F in Big Bear, CA. I didn't think it was too cold but I knew I would not want to experience anything colder.
Hi Aaron, Please send me beach pics!
ReplyDeleteHey everybody, my name is Eli and I'm a transfer Environmental Science major. I'm from Southern California in a town called Tustin. It doesn't get really cold there, but probably the coldest temperature I've experienced was in Skagway, Alaska. I took a train up the mountain during the summer, it was really breathtaking. The temperature was around 42 °F, which honestly wasn't too bad for me.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Sammy and I'm an environmental science major but considering switching it to communications. Born and raised in Santa Ana so it never really got too cold. but the coldest temperature I've experienced was in Sequoia Nat'l Park at 26 degrees.
ReplyDeleteI am Sammy Petrie
DeleteHi my name is Natalie. I am a pre-nursing major at CSU Channel Island. I grew up in Torrance in the South Bay so we never really have cold weather. But the coldest temperature I felt was in London for Winter Break and the temperature was at 45 Fahrenheit.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Connor French. I am a student at CSU Channel Islands and my major is Business Admin. The coldest temperature I have been in was about 15 degree Fahrenheit visiting my cousins when I was little in the snow!
ReplyDeleteConnor French

DeleteHi my name is Cody Johnson. I am an ESRM major at CSUCI. I was originally born in Columbus, Ohio but moved to Florida when I was young then to California where I have been staying. The coldest temperature I can remember being in is close to 60 degrees Fahrenheit when I visited Canada for a bit of one of my vacations. I have first stage scuba certification and am lifeguard certified as well.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jason Suddith and I'm an environmental science and resource management major at California State University Channel Islands. I'm from the San Fernando Valley, a subsection of Los Angeles. It doesn't get that cold too often, but I have experienced sub-freezing temperatures here.
ReplyDeleteI've also been to Juneau before when I was a kid. Everyone told us we brought the LA weather with us because the three days we were there it didn't rain, but apparently rained a lot before and after our trip.
Hi everyone, my name is Paul and I'm a Communication major at CSU Channel Islands. My hometown is Oxnard, CA and the coldest temperature I've felt here was around 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm looking forward to learning and discussing climate change solutions with the class here at CSUCI and in Alaska.
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone! My name is Darline and I just transferred from Oxnard College as a Communication major. I was born and raised in Oxnard, CA. I do run cold, so anything in the 60F is freezing for me.
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Rachael Cavanagh and I am an ESRM major at CI. My hometown is whittier and the coldest it has ever gotten was 32 degrees Fahrenheit with predictions of snow but my water polo coach still made us get in the outdoor pool for practice.

ReplyDeleteHey guys,
ReplyDeleteI'm Glenn Wright--I'm one of the co-instructors of our Alaska course up here in Juneau and our resident Political Scientist. I grew up in Connecticut (as I like to say, exit 66 on I-84), but I now consider Juneau home.
Not sure what the coldest temperatures I've experienced here have been--Juneau isn't as cold as a lot of other parts of Alaska, so probably something in the negative single digits or negative teens (?) That's pretty unusual up here, though it does every once in a while get that cold, especially up high in the mountains. The coldest temperatures I've experienced have been up in Fairbanks, where I got my undergraduate degree--probably somewhere near 55 below zero. I struggle with the effects of repeated frostbite on my fingers from those days, though I miss the landscape and people up there, as well as the beautiful Aurora Borealis Fairbanks regularly gets.
I'm a kayaker, so I've got lots of beach pictures, but here's a video I posted a month or two ago of a kayak trip I took this summer with Jason (one of my co-instructors) near Juneau: https://youtu.be/e8EGj6ccQMc
Hi All,
ReplyDeleteI'm Kevin Maier, the third instructor at UAS. I grew up in Port Townsend, WA, a small town in the rainshadow of the Olympic mountain range. After collecting a few degrees in English up and down the I-5 corridor (undergrad in Bellingham, WA and MA and PhD in Eugene, OR), I have called Juneau home since 2004. Save for Eugene, I've never lived more than a 5 minute drive from salt water, so I'm adapted to maritime climates. The coldest days in Juneau (and also incidentally our most common weather) are 38-42 and raining or snaining. The adage about Juneau weather is that any day of the year can be 42 and raining, and we almost always get one such day in July and one in January, if not every month of the year.
I'll post pictures later, but wanted to get my intro out there.
Looking forward to working with everyone!
Good Morning All,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Matt Berry and I am a Geography and Environmental Studies student at UAS here in Juneau. I grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri and ended up here in Juneau and UAS after being in the US Army for five years.
Growing up in Missouri we got some nice extremes of both ends of the spectrum, with the coldest including windchill to being in the ~ -10F and with heat index above 110F in Mid July 2012. The hottest I have ever experienced was in the Afar Desert in Djibouti in summer 2014 where the heat index was pushing towards ~120F in August.
However living here in Juneau the last few years have allowed for enjoyable experiences in a much more temperate climate as described by Kevin and Glenn above.
My name is Harold Ruchti and I am a Geography and Environmental Sciences major at UAS. My hometown is Galena, Alaska. The coldest temperature that I have experienced there is -54F. The hottest I have experienced in that town is around 84F. The hottest I have experienced ever was in Minnesota and it was in the high 90s low hundreds range.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Marco Banda and I am a Geography and Environmental Studies student at UAS. I am originally from deep South Texas but have made Alaska my home for the past 10 years. The coldest temperature I have experienced was at a conference in Anchorage. It was -17 with a nice wind making it feel like -30. In South Texas we like to say we have two seasons, hot and hotter. The normal summer temperature there is around 95-110 with 100% humidity, gross!
Hello to all,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Muriel and I am in my last semester here at UAS in Juneau pursuing a BS in Geography and Environmental Resources. I was born and raised in Anchorage, AK but hope to move to Juneau around the start of the new year. Anchorage can get chilly in the winter and the coldest I can remember it being was around -23F. However the hottest I have felt it be in Anchorage was this past summer, the weekend of 4th of July where it hit 91F.

ReplyDeleteThe coldest temp I remember from my hometown of Big Lake, AK, was when I was maybe about 7 or 8, it got to -35 degrees. However, if I'm allowed to list temperatures I wouldn't personally remember, when I was only a few months old, my family and I were still living in Anderson, AK. The coldest my mum says it got that winter was as cold as -70!!!
The hottest temp I've ever experienced, was summer of 2014. I went to middle school up in Talkeetna, and was visiting some friends sometime in June. One day, the highest point of the day was 101 degrees!

Hi, I'm Jason Amundson, one of the instructors at UAS. I've lived in Juneau for 8 years, but have called Alaska home since 2001. The coldest I experienced was -53F when I was a graduate student in Fairbanks. We also had one winter where it was below -40F for 17 days straight. After living in Fairbanks, Juneau feels like the Alaska Riviera! I study glaciers, and so I spend more than my share of time being cold.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Ryan O’Sullivan and I am a 5th-year Environmental Science and Resource Management major at CSUCI. I was born and raised in Orange County, California.
